How long does it take to record a song?
In a professional recording environment, it takes about a day to record a song from beginning to end. There are many details that play into how much time you might need to spend on a given track:
How long is your song or songs?
How many performers will record?
How much preproduction will you need?
How well are your instruments behaving?
Do you want multiple overdubs?
Always remember that playing live and recording in the studio need different approaches. Making music takes longer in the studio then it does in rehearsals or at live events.
“Why are you trying to change my song, performance?”
When you come to the studio to record, the engineer or producer will offer suggestions to help you get the most out of your recording time. Every performer or group needs an independent set of ears. Consider the producer as another (temporary) member of your band or ensemble.
Does Colonial Sound have instruments and amps we can use?
We are beginning to grow our collection of available equipment in the studio. We currently have amps, an acoustic piano, and midi keyboards. Going forward we plan to add a studio drum kit as well as guitars and bass instruments.
When should I set up for my session?
Any equipment that you want to use for your session needs to be in the studio before your recording. Student recording times work around open periods and after school programs. This means we need to complete all preproduction work before you arrive for your session.
Any equipment that you want to use in your session (drums, amps, keyboards,) needs to be in the studio on the day before your session (by the end of the school day).
Do you need a copy of my music?
Written sheet music, scores and parts.
All classical performers must supply the studio with a copy of the work they are recording.
Demos:
If your band has an existing demo, please get a copy to the studio before your recording. This will help us to map out the best use of your studio time.
