Colonial Sound

Check out this brief video that shows Hannah Kilcoyne(’12) and Matt Merlino(’12) working in the studio together.  This clip exemplifies what is possible for students at Colonial Sound. It’s a place where you gain valuable experience in audio engineering, music performance, and learn how to combine the two! 

This week, Colonial Sound welcomed several new people into the recording studio. On Monday, singer-songwriter Amelia Henry(’12) came into the studio for her first session ever. This particular recording was initiated in conjunction with the senior projects. She plans to record several songs and release an E.P. in May. Feel free to watch a brief video of Amelia performing her own song!

On Thursday, we had metal musicians Charlie Abend(’12), Jake Solomon(’12), and Nick Baeza-Hochmuth(’12) in for a session. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard a double bass-drum pedal shake the entire school. These three musicians work hard to refine their skill and will certainly achieve a quality finished product.

With February break over, Colonial Sound started work on some fresh projects. On Monday, Suzanne Balles(’15) utilized the studio facilities for the first time and displayed impressive musicianship. She’s a flute player who studies privately with a teacher in the area.  When asked why she wanted to record, she expressed the desire to hear herself play so that she can improve. It was nice to see her take advantage of this resource and leave with a high quality recording.

Today, we enjoyed a treat in the recording studio. Jean Lee, the Mandarin teacher at CCHS, brought three of her classes in the studio to record a Chinese pop song. This was a wonderful opportunity for several new students to come and use the recording studio. I appreciated the creativity that Jean Lee afforded in her curriculum and am happy that Colonial Sound could help and support her class.

One aspect of Colonial Sound that I haven’t reported on is the music lab. The lab consists of several iMac computers complete with professional music software, personal piano keyboards, and studio headphones. Students have the opportunity to learn and use music industry software like Protools, Logic Pro, and Reason. During the day, students can use the lab during their free blocks and lunch periods.

It’s great to see the diversity of music that comes out of the lab. One student can work on an orchestral symphony while another perfects a rap beat or privately practices piano...This diversity played out in the lab today.
